Meet “Ikigai”
One of my favorite tools around discovering purpose is from Japanese culture. It’s called Ikigai and it’s a unique way of discovering what gives your life meaning – essentially, it’s about finding your “reason for being.” It’s simple yet powerful because it helps you pinpoint that sweet spot where what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be rewarded for all overlap. (Download your own blank Ikigai template HERE).
Here’s How to Start Using Ikigai to Explore Your Purpose:
1. What You Love: Make a list of things you genuinely enjoy doing, even if they’re just small, everyday moments. Think of activities that make you lose track of time or give you a sense of excitement.
2. What You’re Good At: Write down things you’re naturally good at or have spent time developing. Don’t limit yourself to just career skills – include talents like listening, organizing, or creativity.
3. What the World Needs: This one can sound big, but it doesn’t have to be! Think of small ways you could make a difference in your community or with people around you. It could be something as simple as being a supportive friend or creating a welcoming home.
4. Things You Can Be Rewarded For: Finally, write down things you could be paid for or recognized for in some way. Even if it’s just personal fulfillment, consider ways these could overlap with the other areas.
Look at the blank Ikigai below (You can download your own copy HERE.) On the blank Ikigai form, fill in your answers to each of the four sections. Take a look at what you wrote and notice any places where these areas overlap. Maybe you love gardening, are good at it, and could use those skills to help beautify your local community. Or perhaps you’re an amazing listener, and your purpose could involve mentoring others. Wherever you find those overlaps, that’s where you may find a purpose that feels just right for you.
Exploring Ikigai is like taking small steps toward what feels meaningful – it’s all about enjoying the process of figuring out what fulfills you in this stage of life.
